California state Senator Scott Wiener reintroduces legislation that will permit bars in several California cities to serve alcohol until 4 am. The bill will offer bars the option to extend alcohol sales hours to 4 am, beginning with a pilot program in six cities: San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, and Long Beach.
The proposed Bill known as SB 930 is intended to help struggling bars, restaurants, and nightclubs especially those that serve marginalized communities bounce back from the pandemic and help invigorate the cities.
Each pilot city will decide for itself whether to remain at California’s blanket 2am closing time or extend later. The Local governments will still have to design and approve a plan, reviewed by Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), to allow for late service hours with full community input. The extended hour permit will follow the normal ABC review process, with full public notice.
